Return of the dryer repairman

Cate on May-28-2008

Jeff’s Appliances called yesterday to advise that the new glide for our LG front loader dryer had finally come in.  The secretary said the repairman would call us today between 8 and 8:30 AM to say what time he’d be here to fix it.

I woke up early this morning, and decided to finish an editing job while I was waiting on the repairman to call.  He finally called at 9:15 AM, and said he expected to get here between 11 AM and 1 PM.

I promptly left for the gym, so that I could get in an hour of exercise before the repairman was expected to arrive.  When I got home at 10:45 AM, he was already here and working on the dryer.  About 45 minutes later, he advised Alexander that the drum inside the dryer is cracked and will need to be replaced.  Of course, they’ll have to order the part and return to install it at a later date.

I was seeing $$$$$$ signs, but the repairman thinks our dryer may still be under warranty.  Hopefully, that will be the case when Jeff’s Appliances looks up the purchase date.  In the meantime, he put the dryer back together and installed the new glide, which will at least put a stop that dreadful thumping noise whenever I’m drying a load of clothes.  Normally, our LG is a very quiet dryer (that’s one of the reasons we bought it, since Alexander’s home office is adjacent to our utility room), but it’s been extremely noisy due to that broken glide.

Appliance repairs

Cate on May-18-2008

Our Jenn-Air side-by-side refrigerator freezer (the same one I posted about a few days ago) suddenly started making a rattling noise that just wouldn’t quit.  It was driving me crazy!  The drip pan under the refrigerator sometimes gets unbalanced and will rattle, so I initially thought it was the culprit this time.  I tried moving the refrigerator back and forth, and from side to side, to no avail.  I also took the bottom panel off the front of the unit and rearranged the drip pan, but the noise persisted.  It was particularly annoying when I’d be doing something in the kitchen, and Alexander or the kids would say something to me from another room.  The rattling noise was so loud, I couldn’t hear what they were saying, so I’d have to come out of the kitchen and ask them to repeat themselves.

After two days of this, I decided on Friday to call Jeff’s Appliances, the store where we’ve bought nearly all of our appliances.  Fortunately, Jeff’s was able to send over a repairman that same afternoon.  He pulled out the refrigerator, laid down on the floor, and began tinkering around in the back of it.  He discovered that a screw near the compressor had vibrated itself loose, and that was causing the noise.  Another repairman from Jeff’s had worked on our refrigerator a couple months ago when a layer of ice was accumulating inside the freezer compartment.  That guy installed a new part that had something to do with the compressor.  The most recent repairman said the previous one had apparently not screwed the part in tight enough.

He didn’t charge us for the service call on the refrigerator, but before he left, I had him look at our LG front loading dryer that’s been making a thumping noise.  He discovered that one of the glides had broken off, and that’s causing the drum to rotate unevenly.  He had to order a new glide for it, which is expected to come in this week.  He charged me $74 for the service call on the dryer.

At any rate, our refrigerator is running quietly again.  What a relief.

And here’s the outside of our refrigerator

Cate on May-11-2008

Since I posted a photo of the inside of our refrigerator, I figured I may as well post one of the outside, as well.  Maybe the outside is even more cluttered than the inside!

I’m not really a collector, but one thing I do enjoy collecting is magnets from places we’ve visited.  We travel from Alexander from time to time, and the magnets are nice reminders of our trips when I stick them on our refrigerator.  Here are the places where I’ve picked up a magnet:

Virginia Beach, Cleveland, Columbus, Kentucky, Kansas, Birmingham, St. Louis, Kansas City, Memphis, Tupelo, Myrtle Beach, St. Petersburg (Florida), Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Niagara Falls, Virginia, Baltimore, Raleigh, and Washington, D.C.

We also have some Elvis magnets (complete with several sets of mix-and-match clothes and accessories!), some unusual magnets with a Chinese Crested dog (the hairless version) with a speech bubble over its head, making quips about being rich, a couple of birthday postcards from my MIL in Eastern Europe to Caroline and Peter, and some paper creations that Caroline made in a quilling class last year.

We’re getting so much stuff on the outside of our refrigerator, it’s hard to find the door handle sometimes.

Our refrigerator is ready to burst

Cate on May-10-2008

When Alexander came home from Louisville last night, he brought a lot of food from the Russian grocery store.  A substantial portion of it is various salads and drinks that need to be refrigerated.  Our refrigerator was already full, but he managed to cram all the new stuff in, as well.

Here’s what it now looks like (and, we’re obviously fond of Perrier water!):
