Caroline’s first riding lesson (and Peter’s fourth)
Caroline’s first riding lesson went quite well. She rode a light chestnut mare named “Honey.” By the time the lesson ended, Caroline almost had the hang of posting at a trot. Honey seems like a nice horse, although Caroline later remarked that she throws her head a lot, despite the fact that she wears a German martingale.
During the riding lesson, Peter rode his favorite horse, a liver chestnut gelding named “Chico.” Chico could probably be classified as a large pony rather than a horse. At any rate, he has an extremely calm disposition, even though he’s a little bit bullheaded. He can immediately recognize a novice rider, and will do things such as cut corners, sneak a bite from the nearest hay bale, and stop when he’s supposed to keep going. He’s very easygoing, and I’m not sure he can (or will) move faster than a trot.
When we got home from the riding lesson, Peter asked how soon we can buy a horse. Caroline started browsing the advertisements in the Ad Bulletin for horses for sale. I told them that IF they don’t lose interest in horses, and IF they continue taking riding lessons for awhile, I may eventually consider leasing a horse. One thing usually leads to another, though, and I know from past experience that horses are an expensive hobby, not to mention the fact that they require a lot of hard work and dedication.
